Link Master's Chao Hacking Document
Introduction
Do you like chao, but don't want to spend all of your time trying to raise one to be perfect in every way possible? Have you ever wanted a chao that could be what ever you wanted it to be in the blink of an eye? Have you ever wanted one of those super rare Official Chao? Or how about one of those impossible to get Egg Chao, Animal Chao, or even an Omochao? Maybe even a time consuming and hard to get Chaos Chao? Well, thanks to the Chao Genome Project, it has all been made possible through the means of hacking.
This document is to teach people how to hack chao, and to take all of the time consuming and agonizing time out of raising them. It also allows you to achieve the unachievable, to obtain what you were not meant to obtain, and to get the results you want, fast. But first, you will need a few items.
Required Items List
First off, and foremost, you will need the following items to Hack Chao.
- A Game Boy Advance or Game Boy Advance SP
- A Game Boy Advance GameShark or Action Replay
- A copy of Sonic Advance, Sonic Advance 2, or Sonic Pinball Party
- A Sonic Advance, Sonic Advance 2, or Sonic Pinball Party ROM
- A Game Boy Advance Emulator (Visual Boy Advance is preferred)
- An open USB Port on your computer
In order to put these hacked chao on your Sonic Adventure DX Director's Cut, or Sonic Adventure 2: Battle Chao Garden, you will also need the following.
- A Nintendo GameCube
- A copy of Sonic Adventure DX Director's Cut or Sonic Adventure 2: Battle
- A Nintendo GameCube Memory Card (to save your chao data)
- A Nintendo GameCube - Game Boy Advance Link Cable
Important Notes
1) You must use the same Sonic Advance ROM as the Sonic Advance game you wish to hack chao for.
2) You must know how to use your GBA GameShark or Action Replays GameSave feature in order to receive your hacked chao.
3) It is best to use a GameSave of your Sonic Advance game, and upload it to your computer, to use on the Visual Boy Advance. Refere to your GameShark or Action Replay's Instruction Manual on how to upload and download GameSaves.
4) If you wish to transfer your hacked Chao from the Tiny Chao Garden on your Game Boy Advance, to the Chao Garden on your Nintendo GameCube, you must be using a GameSave containing a chao that has already been in the GameCube's Chao Garden. Otherwise, you will not be able to fully hack that chao.
5) If you are hacking for the Tiny Chao Garden, then the hacking will be very limited, as most deal with the Nintendo GameCube Chao Garden. The Tiny Chao Garden is limited to GBA Chao Attribute & Ability Type, GBA Chao Egg Color, GBA Chao Main Color, GBA Chao Mood, GBA Chao Belly, Skill Levels, Skill Meters, and Ring Amount.
6) If you are using Sonic Advance 2, then you must complete the game with all 7 Chaos Emeralds with any character, to unlock the Tiny Chao Garden. Sonic Advance and Sonic Pinball Party users do not have to worry about this task, an the Tiny Chao Garden is unlocked as default.
7) All changes must be made in the Tiny Chao Garden. Some changes cannot be made until the chao has hatched from it's egg. Most changes you make to your chao will not appear while you are in the Tiny Chao Garden, so you must Save & Quit, then re-enter before they will appear.
8) Only change the number values in the center grid. If you change anything in the symbol grid to the right, the ROM will freeze.
9) Visual Boy Advance only supports GameShark GameSave files. If you are using an Action Replay, you can change the file extension of the GameSave from .xps to .sps, then change it back when you're ready to import it back to the AR.
10) If you're hacking chao for Sonic Advance (Single Pak), use the addresses under SA1s. If you're hacking chao for Sonic Advance (Combo Pak), use the addresses under SA1c. The addresses under SA2 are for Sonic Advance 2, and SPP for Sonic Pinball Party.
The Hacking
Okay, now that you have the required materials and have read the important notes, you can start hacking. You might be asking yourself right now, "how does one hack chao?" Well, that is what I am about to teach you.
Step 1:
Start up your Visual Boy Advance and load the Sonic ROM you wish to use, then go to File, Import, GameShark Snapshot, and load the GameSave you wish to use. Now enter the Tiny Chao Garden, hatch your chao, and go to Tools, then Memory Viewer.
Step 2:
Now then, you should see a grid of 2-digit, 4-digit, or 8-digit number's in the center of the window, and a grid of symbols on the right of the window. For what we are doing, we need the 2-digit number's for the grid in the middle of the window, and you should forget the symbol grid exists. If it is in 4-digit, or 8-digit, then look at the top middle of your window. You should see 8-bit, 16-bit, and 32-bit. Change it to 8-bit if it is not already selected, and forget 16-bit and 32-bit exist as well.
Step 3:
Now for the actual hacking. Let's say you want your chao to be red when it hatches from its egg. If you look to the right of the 8-bit, 16-bit, and 32-bit options, you will see a box that you can type in. Type or copy and paste the numbers 03003032 for SA1 (Single Pak), 3003022 for SA1 (Combo Pak), 03003BF2 for SA2, or 03004B12 for SPP, then click on GO. It will take you to a particular address of the ROM's memory. Next, type in the value 08 in the top left corner of the center grid.
Step 4:
After you have made all the changes you want, select the option Automatic Update and click on Refresh. If you don't have Automatic Update selected, then none of the changes you have made will be applied. Once you have clicked on Refresh, click on Close.
Step 5:
After you are finished making all the changes you want, pause, then select Save & Quit. After the ROM has reseted, go to File, Export, GameShark Snapshot. Save the GameSave to your preference, and import it back to your Game Boy Advance GameShark or Action Replay. Then load your game, restore your GameSave, and save.
There, you have succesfully hacked a chao. Congratulations.

How To Find Amount Values
Open your Windows Calculator, or anything else you can find that converts to Hexadecimal (Hex). If you are using the Window Calculator, change your view to scientific, and make sure Decimal (Dec) is selected. Now type in the value you want, and change it to Hexadecimal (Hex). If it comes out as an odd number, put an extra 0 in front of it. If it comes out as an even number, don't change it. If you are making values for your chao's Ability Levels or Ability Skill Points, keep it as is. If you are making a Ring Value, then take the first two number's, and the last two number's, and switch their positions.
Ability Level Example:
Let's say you want your chao to be at Lv. 99 (maximum) in an ability. On your calculator, type in 99, and conert it to Hex, and you get 63. That is your new value. Let's say you want it to be Lv. 10. Type in 10, convert it to Hex, and you will get A. Put a 0 in front of it to get 0A, and that is your new value.
Ability Skill Points Example:
Let's say you want your chao to have 9999 Ability Skill Points (maximum) in an ability skill. On your calculator, type in 9999, and conert it to Hex, and you get 270F. That is your new value. Let's say you want it to be 1000. Type in 1000, convert it to Hex, and you will get 3E8. Put a 0 in front of it to get 03E8, and that is your new value.
Ring Value Example:
Let's say you want maximum rings, which is 99999. On your calculator, type in 99999, and conert it to Hex, and you get 1869F. Put a 0 in front of it to get 01869F, and switch the positions of the first two number's, and the last two number's, and you get 9F8601. There is your new value.
Tips & Tricks
I may not have the Memory Address or Value's to enable and disable Immortality, but there is a way around this problem. If you want your chao to be immortal, then take a chao that already has immortality, such as a Chaos Chao, and edit it to your preference.
